What To Consider Before You Buy A Home Wind Generator

Like any major home modification, the decision to install a home wind generator is not a matter to be taken lightly. There are pros and cons to weigh, specifically in reference to where you live and there is preparation to be done before installation begins. In the interests of simplifying the process, we present to you here a summary of how to go about making this important decision.

How Much Wind Power is Available Where I Live?

If you happen to live in North- or South Dakota, then it should come as no surprise to you that you should have no problem powering all the homes you want via wind power; North Dakota alone has enough wind to power over forty percent of all US energy needs as of 2002!  On the other hand, if you live in the Deep South, than wind power doesnít look like such a winning proposition. If you are uncertain, it may be wise to check a wind map before you embark on this journey.

If you live in a particularly hilly or mountainous area, additional wind measurements may be needed to ensure that the wind is not blocked where you live, otherwise such measurements would generally not be worth the cost.

How Much Power Will I Need?

A typical American home consumes an average of slightly more than one kilowatt of power, however a significantly larger wind turbine than a 1 kW model would be required to meet the demands of such a home, depending on the wind available to you, because of the uneven availability of winds fast enough to generate this much power. The American Wind Energy Association advises that a typical American homeowner should choose a wind turbine rated at between 5 and 15 kilowatts.

How Much Will a Home Wind Generator Cost?

Home wind generators are a large investment:  a good setup will incur a substantial initial cost, but bring significant savings over the years it operates. A small home-sized wind turbine may cost between $6,000 and $22,000 to purchase and install depending on the model and service agreements made with the manufacturer. Once operational, home wind generators can shave anywhere from fifty to ninety percent off your electric bill, recouping the initial investment in as little as six years under optimal conditions. In northern areas where little air-conditioning is required, wind turbines can result in a very small electric bill indeed!

Connecting to the Utility Grid

You will need to connect to the utility grid, in order to provide power when your wind turbine is not producing enough power to run your entire home. However, you also will have the opportunity to sell power to your electric utility when you are producing more power than your home needs at that time; the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978 requires public utilities to accept power from small (less than 80 MW) wind energy providers. Your electric utility should be able to advise you on how to go about connecting your wind generator to the grid.

The basic wiring of your home will not need to be changed; however, professional electricians from your electric utility will be needed to connect your generator to the power grid through your electric meter.

A tower of 80 to 120 feet will be provided with the generator kit, in the case of traditional horizontal-axis wind turbines.

Conclusions

Though wind power can be a great investment to the right homeowner, factors including availability of wind and your power needs will determine just how good an investment it is to you. These resources are provided to you so that you may make this determination more readily; if you decide that wind power is for you, care should be taken to find the best (legitimate) deal in wind power available to you.

Everyone all over the world are making wind generators at home to lessen their power bills, and once you do make your own you will be saving our planet as well. Click here to learn how to make home built wind generators to lower your electric bill each month.

So just what wind generator to start with?

A wind generator is simply a device, most often than not it’ll be a wind turbine that uses the power of the blowing wind to make kinetic energy with the spinning rotor blades. Those blades are then connected to the generator.

Then the generator makes use of something that is called electromagnetic, all of this means is that there will be magnets that are spinning around a conductor. The spinning of the magnets round the conductor will turn the kinetic energy into electricity. After the electric power is generated it’ll either charge up a group of electric batteries that you have for storage or it will be connected directly to the power grid.

Now this is an important concept that you need to keep in mind, wind turbines make power by using thin air. What this means is that the wind turbines must be larger compared to the power that it will be able to generate. The best location for a home built wind turbine to be set up it where you have constant blowing wind, as you should know by now that if the wind blades are not spinning you’ll not be producing any electrical energy for your house. The length of the blades will be 5 meters (16 feet) from tip to tip in length.

Don’t be concerned you are able to construct more compact ones that will generate electric power for your home. So that wind generator that has blade of 5 meters (16 feet) will usually be able to produce 500 kWh of electricity per year.

So the average home makes use of about 4500 kWh annually of electricity, so if you do the math you will be making a savings, and if you want to save more all you truly have to do is construct more wind generators. Home Made Wind Generator – Wind Plans

With homemade wind generators you can really take a huge benefit on it. Electrical power is usually generated by electro-mechanical generators driven by steam produced from fossil fuel combustion, or the heat released from nuclear reactions; or from other sources such as kinetic energy extracted from wind or flowing water.

The modern steam turbine invented by Sir Charles Parsons in 1884 today generates about 80 percent of the electric power in the world using a variety of heat sources. Such generators bear no resemblance to Faraday’s homopolar disc generator of 1831, but they still rely on his electromagnetic principle that a conductor linking a changing magnetic field induces a potential difference across its ends.

You really have to check on the background of an electrical power for you to completely make a homemade wind generator.

Electricity is an extremely flexible form of energy, and has been adapted to a huge, and growing, number of uses. The invention of a practical bulb in the 1870s led to lighting becoming one of the first publicly available applications of electrical power.

Although electrification brought with it its own dangers, replacing the naked flames of gas lighting greatly reduced fire hazards within homes and factories. Public utilities were set up in many cities targeting the burgeoning market for electrical lighting.

We have to be very particular as well, we have to give much of our efforts for us to be able to obtain and save electricity with our homemade wind generators.

So why not have your own with your recycled materials and that makes you a resourceful one. In making your own wind plans you have to have materials gathered as well as an effective manual for you to base your project. Wind generators can be very dangerous, with fast moving parts, electrical sparks, and violent weather conditions. So you really have to be careful in making and safety guidelines should be implemented.

Do You Want A Wind Generator?

Do You Want A Wind Generator?

Are you wondering what wind turbines are and what they can do? They are devices use to generate energy from the wind. Depending on how the energy is converted, these rotating devices could be use as a wind generator or windmill.

The importance of energy coming from the wind had been recognized since its discovery. But, as environmental issues, such as global warming has hit our awareness, the need for alternative energy sources had became more prominent.

Energy created by turbines is considered to be one of our best alternatives in term of power resource. Like solar panels, they gather energy from our natural elements without harming the source.

With wind turbines, they can manipulate wind energies and use them to extract water from the deeper part of the ground. With these turning tools, we too can use air energy to run power plant or provide electricity for domestic consumption.

The use of wind generator even for homes is becoming apparent.

Although for a long time, this technology has benefited the society in the form of windmills.

The soaring prices of electric consumptions not only in US but the world, has prompt people to rely on alternative power sources. This situation has increased the demand for solar panels and all types of energy generators.

Of course, some skeptics still raise their questions on the effectiveness these power sources. But, people who have b

een using and relying on alternative power know the secret of their efficiency.

The wind generator typically only creates enough energy for household use and not for industrial use.

There are different kinds of wind generators and knowing about them will help you choose the most efficient one. Here are the major types that you can choose from:

windmill with rotational sails
Image via Wikipedia

Horizontal Axis is the widely use air rotary device. With this type, the shaft and motor are located at the uppermost part of the tower. To generate energy, it should be located where the wind is passing.

To create a better picture of this type, just imagine traveling along farm roads and seeing tall, towers with rotating blades on them.

The cost of this type is cheaper than any other kind. Moreover, this type doesn’t need too much wind to operate though it can produce annoying sounds as it operates.

Vertical Axis, as suggested by the name, has a shaft rotating vertically. In the past years, this type of turbine was not really used as much as the former type. But due to its further development, more and more people are becoming attracted to its advantages.

Vertical turbines are considered to be best used in suburban areas because of its height. Moreover, it doesn’t produce as much noise as the previous type. Both horizontal and vertical windmills can produce energy without having to place it in front of the air.

Having an alternative energy source is important nowadays. Luckily, we have various choices to choose from such as wind turbines. If you want to take advantage of their benefits, choose the best type for your needs.
